Valley of Flowers Valley of Flowers National Park sits in the state of Uttarakhand, India, close to the nation’s northern border. It sits in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas at an elevation between 3000 and 4000 meters. The valley receives large rainfalls in the summer months from the Indian Monsoon, but also stays moist throughout much of the year thanks to mists funneled up this valley due to the surrounding high topography. The valley literally changes color as the year goes on and different species of flowers bloom. Rare species including the Himalayan Blue Poppies and Brahma Kamal find homes in this unique setting. The area was declared a national park in 1982 and added to the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2004. -JBB Image credit: Alosh Bennett (Creative commons license)http://www.flickr.com/photos/13203757@N00/4951216953 -- source link
