A blast of Arctic air descended into the Midwest and Eastern U.S. in February, causing ice to form relatively quickly at the falls and other places like Lake Erie (http://on.fb.me/1EF8bo2). The sub-freezing temperatures have been low enough in some places to become the coldest temperature recorded for those calendar dates.While going out on a day that is -22C (-7F) may seem unappealing, a number of people have braved the cold to take photos of the unusual site. Ice and snow have built up into mounds around and at the base of the falls. Visitors have also described the mist at Niagara as being more like ice pellets.The amount of flowing water is too great to freeze over completely, and the presence of liquid water means the ice can continue to build.
