gaytog:Uh… not really?Kanae: Fought out of frustration with and fear of Anthy.Kozue: Fought out of love for Miki.Shiori: Fought out of intense feelings towards Jury which she was unable to recognize as romantic.Tsuwabuki: Fought out of a desire to become an adult.Wakaba: Fought out of insecurity about not being special.Keiko: Fought out of frustration with Nanami and for the possibility of romance with Touga.Mikage gets points for Kozue, who could arguably said to be fighting to preserve memories of her happy childhood with Miki. Shiori could be argued similarly, although that’s a harder case. But otherwise? Memory has nothing to do with why these people stepped into the dueling arena. This guy is projecting as fuck. However, it just so happens to strike a chord with Utena, whose entire character is built around her mysterious and tragic memories.Utena ostensibly punches Mikage because she resents his assumption that she’d join forces with him, when in reality she is so not okay with the shit he’s pulled… but I suspect it goes deeper than that. She resents Mikage for prying into her memories; for calling her fairy tale backstory into question. She really is screaming “Don’t touch my precious memories.”Fun fact;I actually use the screenshots from this episode a lot to be self deprecating when I make posts ranting about people remaking a film/game/cartoon that was very precious to me. Or when Someone made a video or wrote an essay on something I’m overly emotionally reliant on and misinterpreting it in a way that is so far from what I feel is accurate it actually enrages me. Or when someone is talking shit about something I had a strong childhood connection with. But yeah, Mikage’s lines here always super confused me. probably by design. Because yes, it doesn’t make sense? He’s… wrong??? But this show can be so heavy I wasn’t sure if there was some symbolism I missed or misinterpreted. The idea of him projecting actually went over my head. I find Mikage really hard to understand even at the best of times, because he’s so far removed from reality on such a basic, tangible level, that it’s almost impossible to see him as a human being. -- source link
