beatle-shampoo:sgt-paul:FEBRUARY 19th, 1971↳ Paul McCartney’s first solo single is released.Denny Seiwell, the drummer from the Ram Sessions, called [Another Day] “Eleanor Rigby in New York City.” The lyrics describe the drudgery and sadness of an unnamed woman’s life at work and at home. Paul’s wife, Linda McCartney, provided vocal harmonies on “Another Day”. Describing his and Linda’s distinctive harmonies, McCartney said “I wanted ‘our’ sound.” Matching the lyrical sense of isolation and social alienation was the unique sound of “Another Day.” Studio Assistant Engineer of the Ram sessions Dixon Van Winkle said that Paul asked him to pick the single. With McCartney’s blessing, Winkle mixed the song and pressed 100 copies for radio stations. “The next day I heard it on the air, I realized…we got carried away with the bass part…it pumped like crazy. But we never remixed the song, and Paul never said anything.”(please check out this amazing post about ‘Another Day’ too!)I was re-listening to “Another Day” recently and not only is it absolutely divine melodically, with some interesting tempo switches, but that guitar and bass in the background–!!! Like, the strumming goes from gentle to an attack on the strings, raising or lowering the tension and anticipation of the song. Then, as each of the song’s several anticipations and climaxes pass, we go back into the routine, “every day she takes her morning bath…” Like, not just the words, but the music really tells the story as well as tugs at your emotions. ::chef’s kiss” -- source link
