“Temperance,” from the Aztec tarot deck I have been painting. Here is painted a Mexica or Aztec two spirit person, who contains both male and female within them. One of the words for someone we might consider a trans woman is cihuayollotl, or, “heart of a woman.” Cihuayollolt people were not considered male or female, but rather a third gender. They traditionally held femine roles in society, and were often priestesses. They could be concubines, but not principle wives. They held an honored role in Nahua society, until the arrival of the Spaniards. They usually dressed in women’s clothing. The person painted here is meant to represent a gender non binary person, who holds both male and female within them. It’s available as a print in my etsy shop.
