fromthehandsofquacks:This is Eliza Anna Grier (1864-1902), an American physician and in 1897, became the first African-American woman licensed to practice medicine in the state of Georgia.An emancipated slave, Grier faced tremendous racial and financial hardship while pursuing her dreams of becoming a doctor. In 1890, she wrote to the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, which was the first medical school for women in America, inquiring the costs of tuition. “I have no money and no source from which to get it…only as I work for every dollar,” she wrote. After being accepted to the school, she spent the next seven years alternating a year of study with a year of working, picking cotton to pay for tuition. She died five years after receiving her licence to practice medicine. -- source link
