Bowerbirds + Strand of Oaks and Prypyat at Doug FirOverallSaturday night before Halloween. Decision made to have a quiet, introspective evening at Doug Fir.The crowd was in the same boat as me, all people who didn’t want to deal with Halloween shenanigans. There was one woman at the show in costume as a “censored naked girl” who was wearing a nude body suit and black censor bars over her lady parts. She looked uncomfortable. There was also a guy who might have been dressed as a lumberjack or might have just had really wide suspenders on. Won tickets from KPSU! Thanks!!PrypyatArrived halfway through this set of a lady cellist (same cellist from Bowerbirds) and dude guitarist. Both singing.Pretty, quirky songs. Their passion sucks you in.Short skirt plus cello equals bad idea jones.Strand of OaksThe roadie came on stage and started singing. Oh wait, that’s not the roadie that’s Strand of Oaks. It’s just one guy and his electric guitar. Can you tell I haven’t listened to his music before? And then I start listening. Whoa. Epic topics in the first song alone. Pretty intense and crowd got really quiet. In between songs, Timothy Showalter told us he had been on a “trip” in Boise and he “hadn’t quite snapped back yet." This isn’t the type if music you tap your toes to and there was a guy ROCKING out in the crowd. Just because it’s music doesn’t mean dance.I really like his voice. There was a song about killing John Bullishi’s drug dealer. Each song got more and more intense and the topics kept getting stranger and stranger. Then, during a song that wins first prize for being the most depressing live song I have heard this year, I GOT THE GIGGLES. The inappropriate giggle train hit me hard and I had to excuse myself and get another drink. Maybe the introspective evening wasn’t the best choice for me after all. BowerbirdsThere were lots of people there all of a sudden. This band has a pretty hard core following. I have never been so glad to see a drummer in my life.I can’t really put my finger on what makes this band stand apart from other bands like this, but they do stand out. Maybe it’s the chemistry? Maybe it’s the fact that the entire crowd in here is smiling? At some point during their set my friend was, um, smashed and so we had to leave. I will most definitely catch them when they come through next.In ConclusionI give this show 5 stars. One star for skipping Halloween this year. Two stars for the awesome cellist who played two sets. One star for the Picard reference during the Strand of Oaks set. One star for the one person wearing a Halloween costume. xoxo A -- source link
