About 20 years ago, in 1993, Japan joined the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Shirakami Sanchi, as one of the first to join the list in Japan, is an extensive mountain range straddling the border between Aomori and Akita in the northern Tohoku Region of Japan. The central core of Shirakami Sanchi is made up of the last virgin beech forests in Japan, which was the main reason to be selected as a World Heritage Site.
