Two Mongolian manuscript maps, with zoomed-in details.Starting in 1635 under the Qing dynasty, each sum (district) in Mongolia was required to produce a map of its territory every ten years and send it to headquarters in Beijing.Mongol cartography is really beautiful. The maps were painted in color, and show a bird’s-eye view of the countryside with lakes, mountains, and rivers drawn looking like themselves, not using triangle symbols or something. Around the edges of each sum are ovoos (cairns) with descriptions on their location.(The grids on the “zoomed in” maps are not on the original maps, they’re from this website, which has many more mongol maps.) -- source link
