I know it’s 4:30AM, but see those yellow flowers? They’re from common mullein, aka Verbascum thapsus. Native to Europe, it has invaded other parts of the world, including north America. The plants are very striking, they can grow up to 7 feet tall with a giant flower spike, filled with these small yellow flowers. It has been used for thousands of years for various herbal purposes, and there is a tiny amount of science to back up at least some of the claims. So the kicker is that I’ve been going out and collecting and attempting to dry these flowers, just sort of going along doing my thing until I thought I’d check to see what the infamous Mountain Rose Herbal people thought of it. Well, what they think about it is that you can get a lot of money for things that are all over my yard, apparently! I’m shocked. They’re out of stock of several of their mullein items, including the flowers that are here in my picture. I haven’t been gathering the leaves but apparently that’s a Potentially Useful Thing as well.Everyone says to harvest late morning because dew but it’s always very humid and wet here, and I’m never up then, and there’s a particular something about harvesting herbs at night. Particularly tonight. Very tired but there’s more to harvest, like the veggies. I think I will first make a cup of mullein flower tea, just to see what it does (if anything). -- source link
