Friendly reminder that Armin was ready to kill himself because he though he was useless. He believed that he owed Mikasa for Eren’s life, and that as the better soldier, her life would be more important than his own. It isn’t shown in this gif, but when Mikasa throws his blade away, he honestly believes she is planning on letting him get eaten without another way out- as revenge for Eren no doubt. Instead, she puts herself and Connie in danger, using all their fuel to bring Armin back to HQ when they otherwise would have gotten there with enough gas to help clear out the supply room.My favorite part about this scene is how right before this, Mikasa thought she was ready to die. She was so convinced that she had given up, until she couldn’t sit still and die. Her entire existence is to survive, and to help others do the same. She told Armin “This isn’t the time to get emotional,” but was completely caught up in her own thoughts, not the fact that she spurred a bunch of kids on and then gave up. Armin is the one who reminds her of her true nature, to protect and survive. She can now empathize with him though, the kid who always believed that his destiny was to be a burden until he was titan chow, that giving away his remaining resources is the only thing he will be able to do that makes up for how useless of a soldier he is: he is more useful dead than holding back his comrades. So, without even giving it a second thought, her gut reaction is to take away the pointy thing and tell him that there’s no way she’s going to leave him here to die.I think this is where Armin (and the audience) realize that Mikasa honestly cares a lot about Armin- she doesn’t debate about whether he is a necessary sacrifice for a better soldier (juxtaposed to Jean watching Tom in the scene right after, who understands that sometimes you can’t save everyone and it’s better to sacrifice the few than send everyone to their death), she straight up refuses to leave him behind. She tells him that he is worth more than the gas in his tank and the distraction he would offer a passing titan, and he calms down enough to realize that she’s not going to give up on him, that she believes he’s worth saving, so he’d better have something good to offer. -- source link
