1863-project-art:OC-tober: Day 15Lucretia Snell - The World Turned Upside DownLucretia may be a maidservant, but she has the theatre in her blood. Although her father is English, her mother was a commedia dell’arte performer from Italy before settling down together with Lucretia’s father, also an actor. They maintained their ties to the theatre world, where Lucretia learned how to do all manner of makeup for actors by watching her parents, and as she got older Lucretia ended up working as a maid for Lady Philippa Willoughby, the wife of Lord Aurelius Willoughby, who was the patron of a certain theatre troupe. She was able to use her skills with makeup and costuming to both make Lady Philippa look her best and costume and style the theatre troupe’s members, becoming good friends with them as she worked on them. Lucretia and Richard became an item through this and remained together until the theatre troupe split up, though they promised they’d do their best to find each other out in the world again.Lucretia is quick-witted, clever, and resourceful, taking after her mother, who played Columbina roles in the commedia dell’arte. As a sort of real-life Columbina, right down to being a servant who helps solve problems for the wealthier people she’s employed by who lack common sense, she’s considered highly valuable by the Willoughby family and during the war years they ensure her safety by having her travel with them. This, of course, sets her up for the reunion she wants more than anything, because the Willoughby family has a long-standing friendship with the Thornburgh family, and when Amphilis finds out that Aurelius and Philippa were the patrons of the theatre troupe whose members she’s somehow collected a lot of, she knows what she has to do… -- source link
