Feeling that post-lunch catnap coming on? Time for a hot afternoon cup of…crystallizing caffeine. Above is last year’s award for 2nd place in Nikon’s Small World in Motion competition. The gif was created from a video made by Douglas Clark. It shows a time-lapse of crystals forming in a single drop of a saturated solution of caffeine in water. It actually took 20 minutes for these crystal spikes to grow.The video was shot through a polarizing microscope, which enhances contrast with filters that allow light to come through in only one direction. -- source link
