EarthcachingPerhaps you’ve heard of Geocaching; the spread of GPS technology into everything from cars to handheld cell phones has allowed people to hide items around the world as humanity’s largest treasure hunt. As of right now, over 2 million sites can be found listed at geocaching.comIf you’re going to send people around the world, why not add in a few details about what’s there? This boulder is an Earthcaching site in Finland, one of over 20,000 Earthcaching sites worldwide. Earthcaching is a small subset of geocaching; in Earthcaching, the GPS tagged sites are registered because they’re geologically interesting and include a lesson on what’s there. This boulder is a piece of Rapakivi Granite(http://tmblr.co/Zyv2Js1Zz1JTG), one of the coolest textures in granites, found in Helsinki, Finland. In this rock type, named after a core of pinkish potassium feldspar is rounded and rimmed by a whitish layer of plagioclase, basically creating an igneous rock full of spherical minerals. This granite is over 2 billion years old and it arrived on this spot after being carried and dropped by a glacier during the last ice age.Today, as part of Earth Science Week, is considered National Earthcaching Day.
