He knows that nothing will happen if he stays awake until midnight, that it is just another hour, another minute, and nothing really changes at all. But he’s not going to say no when Jaime invites him over to celebrate. It’s like normal hanging out, but with a sense of anticipation, because Jaime keeps counting down. “Five hours to go.” “Four hours now, hermano.” “Just three hours.” Bart finds himself caring because Jaime cares, finds himself checking the clock every few seconds, squirming more than usual. The specials on tv counting down to the new year are mostly boring. Bart manages to learn a few bizarre things. “What’s the big deal about a new year’s kiss, her-man-o?” Jaime shrugs. “It’s like a tradition,” he explains. “People kiss at midnight. Nightwing says him and the other seniors had an epic one on their first New Year’s as a team. I think he was with Zatanna then. That was before her and Rocket joined the Justice League. And Rocket was with Aqualad, I think, and that was when Artemis and Kid Flash…” “What are resolutions for?” “You know, something to change about yourself for the new year. Be a better person. Like stop stealing other people’s Chicken Whizees.” Midnight should be easy, with the late nights they pull on missions, but Bart finds himself getting sleepy. Blame all the junk food he’s eaten. He and Jaime find themselves sprawled on the couch in the dark, wrappers scattered around the room like fallen soldiers, the tv turned down. “Any minute now,” Jaime yawns. “You just have to see the ball, I swear.” The ball drops, as promised, and just as Bart suspected it’s nothing special. Nothing feels different. Another minute has ticked away. “Crash?” Jaime asks sleepily.“Crash,” Bart assures him.“Good,” Jaime says. He yawns again. “Good night, hermano.
