3/9/20Pictured: the third floor stacksToday I:dragged myself to campus and managed to snag a sweet parking spot–I had to parallel park for the first time in well over a year, and I was v successful!descended into the stacks, also for the first time in like a year. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it, like whether I’d be excited or anxious, but I didn’t really feel anything, so that’s better than a negative reaction, I guess. avoided working on chapter revisions to do some diss research. tbh this was not ideal, I am past my initial deadline for the chap and promised it’d be in by early next week, but it/the whole project fills me with such deep anxiety that I’ve been avoiding it hardcore. I did manage to find a couple of digitized (and downloadable!) books from the mid 1800s which are the first catalogues of vases in the Hermitage Museum, and include the material from the Black Sea. They aren’t going to be super helpful for my actual research (no pics, yikes) but they’re important to have to reference, and I’ve now got a pretty complete grasp of the late 19th/early 20th c work on this material, and am feeling like I’m actually in a place where I can write up the Black Sea case study. Something that’s kind of worrying me is that while the early scholarship was primarily in French and German (frustrating, but understandable and ostensibly within my capabilities) there’s been a lot of work in Russian over the past century and I just…don’t know what to do about that. No one expects me to know Russian, but I feel hesitant about trying to write a major section of my dissertation without being clear on where Russian scholarship has gone with it. It doesn’t feel like responsible scholarship, and it’s got me frustrated with my anglophone privilege/bias overall. I dunno…it’s definitely something for future me to reckon with but it’s really been weighing on me left myself a piece of banana bread in the office so I can have it as a treat after class tomorrow!got a box of mike and ikes, which I’ve been craving ever since Tumblr started aggressively serving me ads about the class action lawsuit, and I am going to eat them during the flyers game -- source link
