nathanandersonart:Kicking off my project with the letter A! Going to be putting together a series of 26 mythological/folkloric/cryptid creatures and characters for each letter of the alphabet. All REBLOGS and LIKES are appreciated!Name: Ammit, Ammut, Ahemait.Area of Origin: EgyptWith a name meaning ‘Devourer’ or ‘Soul-Eater’, Ammit was a female demon from ancient Egypt. The beast was comprised of the head of a crocodile, the frontal half of a lion, and the back-end of a hippo; the three largest man-eaters known to the Egyptians. Ammit lived near the scales of justice in the Egyptian underworld. There, Anubis weighed the heart of a person against the feather of Ma’at, the goddess of truth. If the heart was deemed un-pure, Ammit would devour it and the person would be unfit to continue their journey towards immortality. The person’s soul would then be forever restless, likened to ‘dying a second time’. For Ammit’s design, It was pretty straightforward, I looked at the various hieroglyphs of her and went from there. -- source link
