The show initially aired on National Education Television, which later became the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Sesame Street was created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett, and was designed to educate children - especially those from lower income backgrounds - using Jim Henson’s iconic Muppet characters.
