british-history:It was on this day in British history, 17 January 1773, that Captain Cook and his crew aboard ‘Resolution’ became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle by ship. The historic crossing took place during Cook’s second voyage. During the same voyage Cook visited Easter Island, Tahiti, the South Sandwich Islands, and South Georgia, among others. Cook came fairly close to discovering the landmass of Antarctica, but solid sea ice prevented him from sailing any further. -- source link
