Photo by William Vandivert for Life magazine’s feature Pant-y-Waun, Wales (1940)Pant-y-Waun (“heathland hollow”) was a village in South Wales. I use the past tense because, during the 1960s, open-cast coal mining operations in the surrounding area were extended. As a result, the village - with its houses, school, pubs (3), chapels (3) and community hall - was gradually obliterated. This portrait is haunting me: this boy seems so resolute, so intelligent, so self-contained. I know what eventually happened to his village, but I wonder what became of him. -- source link
