52 year old Free-Thinker. Ex-Christian. When I was a Christian I was serious about studying the Bible and praying to the god I believed in. My experience for many years was mostly positive. My family and I had many friends in our church and we were active and engaged in the exercise of our faith. BUT…….I had so many questions that no pastor or Christian book (I read many) ever came close to answering. Questions about the bible’s stance on slavery and women’s rights, the treatment of LGBT community, absolute vs relative moralism, the way some (most) “sins” are ignored and others “championed”…..Etc. I could go on & on. The point being that I came to a point when I decided to be intellectually honest with myself and seek the answers to these questions. What I found after reading Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Dan Barker, Susan Jacoby, Richard Dawkins opened my eyes to an entirely new way of thinking. Science and reason are now the yardstick by which my decisions are measured and informed. I’m not angry at god or the people of my church. No. I am an Atheist for the only good reason there is to be an Atheist……because there is no god. Never has been, never will be.Today marks 5 years (five!!!) of Faces of Atheists!
