SeasonedThis cobble was picked up near the Dead Sea. The layer crusting around the outside of the sedimentary rock is halite, aka common sodium chloride/table salt. As water flows into the Dead Sea, it picks up salt from the rocks in the surrounding landscape, and there is currently no way out of the Dead Sea for that water other than evaporation. When the water evaporates, it leaves the salt behind, eventually growing crystals like the nice salt cubes here. The cobble served as a solid surface where the salt cubes could nucleate. The coin is here for scale.-JBBImage source:https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HaliteEncrustedCobbleDeadSea.JPG -- source link
