Surrounded by other trans people and their dedicated allies who are united in our life-long opposition to fascism, capitalism, white supremacy, colonialism, and patriarchy, it would be excusable to assume that I feel far away from the events in Charlottsville: but I don’t. These people (i hesitate to bless nazis with that generous term) are my distant relatives. We are born of the same culture. The same set of circumstances that created those men and the women coerced into supporting them created me and the people I love. This is our problem. There is a war that has been raging for centuries that surfaces variably. This is an epic surfacing. Clearly, “us” and “them” don’t work…the white supremacists in Charlottsville are my teachers, my second cousins, my ex partner.
