For those who want some context on what a “Toaster Punk” is: this was from a 1994 advertisement for Video Toaster software by NewTek. Video Toaster was a way to create video graphics for the Amiga that allowed someone to become a miniature production company for a few thousand dollars, an early version of iMovie, Adobe, or Camtasia. Babylon 5, for instance, was created on a NewTek system. Wil Wheaton, along with Penn Gillette and Tony Hawk, were users of the Toaster system as well as spokespersons. The most famous spokesperson and model for NewTek was technology display model and evangelist Kiki Stockhammer (who actually had a cameo in the Babylon 5 pilot movie). I’m actually curious for Halt and Catch Fire to introduce a character based on Kiki Stockhammer, who was a well known figure in the display scene. She’s still working today as a speaker at technology conferences. I don’t like sharing social media images without permission, but nearly all of the ones I could find of her are middle aged engineers who remember her from her heyday with Video Toaster and are just thrilled to see her again. “She’s still got it!” -- source link
