probablyfunrpgideas: probablyfunrpgideas: lawfulgoodness: It’s not just me, right? Play a character who is a DM looking for inspiration out in the world. Or maybe the classic “author/poet/composer following the mighty heroes” with the twist that they keep changing the genre or focus of their story as they encounter new ideas and people. The following campaign concept was proposed by a new friend, @stufff. It’s a bit long, but there’s plenty of good ideas in there. It reminds me of the Rifts setting. Here’s a bit of an odd idea: Make a setting that features several different systems and worlds colliding, with each player from a different system or book. Enemies also can come from any of the systems you pick, potentially resulting in interesting situations such as characters who don’t have a particular stat having to make saving throws for it, etc. Maybe roll a D4 and determine what happens (1 to use attacker’s system, 2 to use defender’s system, 3 to use a hybrid made up on the spot, 4 does nothing. Maybe take inspiration from a couple of non-RPG books. I recommend Alterworld or Double Jump (cover is bad, but extremely neat concept). Maybe make the Big Bad be a former resident of a world that used an OP system. Throw in some NPCs from webcomics, such as Goblins (the webcomic) or The Order Of The Stick. Plus, since it’s a setting where tons of worlds are smashing together, basically anything goes. Throw in a dungeon where the players have to sing a song of their choice, with bonuses based on their character’s voice and vocals in the song (an orc with a gravelly voice would probably sing Metallica better than Taylor Swift, for example). Alternatively, use Band Hero to determine performance. Homebrew, Star Wars, Warhammer 40K, Minecraft, Terraria, Overwatch, anything goes! That way, if you get tired of one thing, your players are probably going to end up in a different system pretty quickly. Plus, you can still control quite a bit about the setting. How chaotic is it? Are there regions with a certain system, or does it switch around randomly? Are certain systems slowly decaying or changing due to the other systems? Maybe the characters gain powers or abilities based on where they are when they level, such as being able to God Tier in a Homestuck area? What about things nearby? In a Minecraft area, can the players create magical items in exchange for levels? Do items or spells lose power when in areas more different to their original, such as God Tier powers being much weaker in a strictly technological setting, such as Star Trek? Does a blaster rifle work in Lord of the Rings? Can the players lure a Sith into Star Trek to weaken their force powers? Etc. Sorry for the super long list of replies, I had this idea and started writing and suddenly I have 6 posts of it. -- source link
