Hiraeth Creature #1158 - Ocean Echo“There is one place in the world where one can find vast hills of coral, swaying forests of kelp, and sea beasts living vividly as they would underwater in the middle of dry land— this place, of course, being the magical ravine known as the Great Betwixt. Ancient magics from across the realm came to gather to make a biome unlike any other, where creatures of Tethys and the Undercroft live together in balance. This is not the first time the queens of earth and water have worked together to perserve life. This union can be found underneath the ravine itself, that being the remnants of a primordial sea, kept secret in gigantic, underground sanctums. Some of the beasts of the Betwixt originate from this long-lost ocean, but the bodies of water themselves are largely unknown to the people of Hiraeth.These Undercroft oceans hold wells of great magic from the spiritual awakening that set Hiraeth on the course it is still following to this day. This magic is so powerful it has been known to create arcane spectres known as “Ocean Echoes”— strange, incorporeal beings that take on the forms of various sea life. They have been witnessed gathering in the Betwixt, creating dazzling displays that could convince onlookers that they were suddenly transported to some great expanse within Tethys herself. Water spirits and those highly attuned to water magic are said to be able to command them to aid them in battle or in finding magical reagents hidden under the Betwixt’s sands. They tend to flock at night and to varying degrees depending on the Moon’s cycle, but during the day they seem like eerie after images; ghosts of raw magic, left over from the forging of the world. They gather in the greatest frequencies during the Full Moon, sometimes creating magical vortexes that can whisk one away to the Echo’s birth place within the ancient hidden oceans, and bringing them back once the Sun rises.” -- source link
