Hiraeth Creature #1180 - Fafirax“Lumbering through walls of flora, undeterred by weaving branches or thorn-laced vines, and wading through raging rapids, unflinching through the pummelling waters, the Fafirax is impossible to halt once it has a destination in mind. Compared to many gargantuan beasts of Hiraeth, a Fafirax may seem small, but they still stand over the height of any nomad and weigh more than a giant. A pup is said to take four hillfolk warriors to carry and a full-grown adult will likely never leave the surface of the world without divine intervention. Their resilience goes beyond the physical temperament, as they also have an immunity to most poisons, allowing them to feed on normally lethal plants and rest in areas of the jungle most creatures would avoid. A Fafirax shell will shatter any fang or blade but they have a softer hide just beneath that can be a target for a plethora of crafty jungle hunters. A predator would have to take a calculated risk, though, since it is still guarded by their sharp claws and clubbed tail. Fafirax are hardy and more than capable combatants, but they prefer to peacefully trot along at their own pace, only reacting to nearby carnivores if they bother to try to strike them first. Fafirax make their homes in hillside caverns or in deep burrows at the bottom of colossal, sky-piercing trees. Their dens are often made in places rich with minerals and gemstones, but they have no need for them, going so far in their indifference as to simply not react when adventurers come into their homes and start plundering. Fafirax only care if they have pups around trying to sleep— any explorer foolish enough not to back away will be promptly tossed back out. A lone Fafirax makes a wonderful, unintentional companion for travellers in the jungle, as sharing a shelter with such a powerful creature usually deters night-time hunters. Fafirax have amazing senses, able to plot out a course through the jungle through hearing and smell alone. If one doesn’t care about their destination, hitching a ride on the back of this beast will take them far around the wilds in relative safety, though the free tour will most likely end when the Fafirax goes crashing though thorny bushes or noxious bulbs. It takes a lot of energy to heave themselves about, which is part of the explanation for their overly-lax attitude. The other part stems from the past, when they were a main force in defending the jungles of Hiraeth during the Giant’s March generations ago. It was the only time in history Fafirax were seen gathering in groups, forming bulwarks impossible for giants to cross. Since then, they have become a highly respected beast among folk living in the jungles, and are believed to still be resting from those arduous battles, taking each day slowly, unbothered by small problems.” -- source link
