My time in Bruges has reminded me that travel isn’t just about me, and my growth, and my challenges. It’s about meeting new people, discovering new perspectives… and having fun! As much as I love solo exploring, the past few days have been a nice change of pace for me because I’ve had the chance to interact with a lot of cool fellow travelers and experience the city with them. And yesterday, I recharged my introvert batteries amid all the socializing by taking a walk in an unfamiliar neighborhood of Bruges. It was drizzling rain and I didn’t have an umbrella, but I’m actually the kind of crazy person who likes walking in the rain as long as it’s not a downpour. As I walked and explored and processed and recharged, I realized that solo travel really is the best of both worlds for me. I think people have a misconception that it has to be a very lonely experience. But the truth is, I can set out on my own to do what I want, or I can forge friendships with other solo travelers if I feel like socializing. It’s a balance between fun and introspection that’s perfect for me. I’ve interacted with locals quite a bit during my travels so far, whether they’re tour guides or AirBnB hosts. It’s so interesting and necessary, I think, to spend time with locals to get a better feeling for the destination’s authentic culture and way of life. It adds a dimension and depth to your travels; it grounds you in a colorful reality, versus floating around in your tourist bubble. BUT… I also adore meeting other travelers. There’s a double benefit to hanging out with fellow wanderers: if you’re craving social interaction, you’ve got someone to explore with. But aside from delving into the destination you’re in, you also have the benefit of learning more about your new friends’ countries and cultures and perspectives as well. And you get a ton of ideas and inspiration for future trips! During this vacation, I’ve met many other solo travelers, including several women who are traveling solo for the first time like me. And I’ve been reminded that solo travelers are usually really, really cool people–kindred souls who are as restless and fascinated and passionate about travel as I am. It really is a feeling of excitement mixed with relief when you encounter people who are on the same journey. You sit and drink a local beer and swap travel stories and recommendations with them and suddenly you’ve found your tribe. You don’t need to explain your wanderlust, or why you’re vacationing alone. They get it, because they’re just like you. You’re no longer traveling by yourself; you’re a part of a huge network of fellow explorers inspired by an insatiable curiosity about the world. A family that inspires you to keep going, to follow your dreams of travel and experience the world because it’s possible, it’s worthwhile and it’s who you are.
