I started the day with a visit to St. Peter’s Abbey. The plaza in front of it looked like it got hit by a trash tornado so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I decided to do a handheld video tour which had some pros and cons. Pro: It takes you to a few semi-hidden places, including the organist balcony in the church, which gives you a truly stunning view–plus an inside look at the organ, which was at one time powered by pedals that look like a medieval exercise machine. The tour also guides you to the refectory, which has a beautiful painted ceiling that’s currently being restored. Plus, you’ll go to the garden, which is a pretty piece of greenery where you’ll find herb plants, a small vineyard and medieval ruins. Possible con: You also go to the wine cellar and the attic which are musty, empty and creeeeepy. I ran into an employee in the deserted attic and nearly keeled over in shock. Pro: You learn a bit about the abbey’s history. Con: But not really the things you want to know. The narrative is pretty cheesy and longwinded and I inadvertently tuned it out a lot. There were videos elsewhere in the abbey that were more helpful. Possible pro: Is that Scott Eastwood playing Raphael in the video tour? No? Darn. -- source link
