heroineimages: steftastan: I finally have a free evening to begin sharing all the Visual Dev stuff I did for The Magicians! This character is featured in a brief animation that appeared at the start of the second episode of season 3. We are told the story of a little girl who is plunged into a quest to find seven keys to free her father. My job was to design the characters, and to find the art direction for the film based on the references provided by the show runner and my director’s comments. The biggest struggle with the girl at first was finding an attire that was suited to her. We started out at very heavy-looking outfits with varying pieces of armor, but because of story reasons her final outfit is a lot more delicate and feminine. During the ideation process we were also trying to find the style to draw her in, and how it’d look against a background with a similar look. The color plate of her drawing the sword really helped us understand how to frame each image and what sort of elements could work in each scene. We had that working for us, but the girl’s general demeanor and style still needed adjustment. For this clip we needed to show the despair, the catalyst of this character’s quest, so I scribbled some poses, following the new art direction requirements. At this point the art became more simplified. The last two images made it into the clip! At this point of production we shifted her hair color from red to almost platinum blonde to add a bit of fantasy flair to her design, and finally settled on the details of her outfit. Overall I am super happy with how this character turned out. :) Next up I still have to share the Witch and the girl’s Father… more sketches incoming! Stef, they’re glorious! -- source link
