philamuseum: Rubens Peale made a career of managing his family’s museums in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York, but during the last decade of his life he turned to still-life painting. Primarily a self-taught artist, he had a gift for pictorial design, which, together with his bold forms and color, earned his work a place alongside the naturalistic compositions of his elder brother, Raphaelle, and his uncle, James, who were founders of the American still-life tradition.
