On wednesday I had the amazing opportunity to do my first teach-in on immigrant detention and deportation with 7th graders at the Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School in Queens, NY. It was part of the school’s kick-off to a 3-month study program on activism called “Taking A Stand." Lt. Dan Choi and Debbie Almontaser were also invited to the event. I presented some of the work that I have been doing in collaboration with families and detainees who are currently suffering because of the harsh laws that govern the U.S. immigration system. I then shared the story of my boyfriend’s detention, and later we began to organize a march. The students made signs, prepared chants, wrote out the facts around detention and deportation. When we were ready, the entire group left the classroom and began marching and chanting throughout the school!! It was simply the most fascinating experience, the children had so much energy! and the teachers and principals were so supportive! UP UP with EDUCATIONDOWN DOWN with deportation I will be working with the school on an oral history project in the weeks to come. I can’t wait! :) -- source link
