earthstory: The River of Colors Hidden Within Fields of Green The river that ran away with paradise, Cano Cristales, is just east of the Andes in central Colombia’s “Serrania de la Macarena” National Park. During specific months of the year, this 100km long river runs with the shades of red, blue, yellow, orange and green in a natural display of a picky aquatic plant called Macarenia clavigera. Given precise water levels and just the right amount of sunlight, the plant can take on these brightly colored hues. The best times to catch a glimpse of the river’s beauty is in the dry season, January through May and June through December.
