artchipel: Art Writer’s Wednesday 14 Diego Fernandez (Argentina) Diego Fernandez creates art with utmost care, as he paints minimal yet distinctive features and figures in ways that show the clarity with which he perceives his subjects. The Buenos Aires-based artist pays formidable attention to each and every detail of his subjects’ appearances, from the tones and shadows of their skin to their finest strands of hair, in order to capture them both wholly and gracefully. It would be hard not to fall for the finesse of Fernandez’s portraits, which make use of clean lines, muted colours and high levels of detail and symmetry. They also bear an impressive resemblance to traditional art which, considering his almost exclusive use of digital techniques, highlights the artist’s particularly unique skill. A fusion of femininity and naturalist elements, Fernandez’s art subtly takes realism to the next level, as it inches towards a surrealism that enhances his subjects’ most compelling auras. In their simplicity, each portrait conveys an evocative vision of a human being’s beauty. Through their delicate appearances, Fernandez’s portraits go beyond being mere physical representations: they also seek to explore the depths of his subjects’ mind and soul, and succeed in reaching out to the viewer with their emotional quality. Most notable about Fernandez’s art is the unique atmosphere that fills each softly-traced line: timeless, nostalgic and tinged with a dramatic feel, such atmosphere is what illuminates his work and reveals the artist’s highly pensive nature.
